Today I had a new visitor

Today it was a bluebird that visited, perched on the branch an arm's length outside my window. Happy, energetic little birds, they usually flutter away only seconds after landing, but this one remained for thirty seconds or so.

It's usually cardinals that visit me on bright mornings. There are six who have become my friends, sitting with me almost daily as I sip my coffee and catch up on the news. According to Southern tradition, they symbolize the presence of a departed loved one visiting. "When a cardinal appears, an angel is near," goes the expression.

Bluebirds are also messengers of hope. They are spiritual guardians that ward off evil.

Because they are associated with the arrival of spring, they are signs of renewal and reminders that cheer follows sorrow in the natural way of things.

Times are anxious. We are bombarded with anger and fear. But I am surrounded by gentle reminders of goodness and hope. I bet you are, too, if you pay attention. What good omens do you see?
